Prints

One of the biggest takeaways from my recent trip to the west coast was a reaffirmation of the importance of physical prints. Especially now, in this digital age where photographs are more disposable than ever, there is something special, something almost bespoke, and certainly something beautiful, and original, in a good print on quality paper. As creatives, it is our responsibility to remind folks of the beauty of texture, the sumptuousness of tactility.

I have no illusions that we are going to suddenly go back to printing everything–sharing and communicating photos via social media and the web are already commonplace practices. But printing one’s photos strikes the same chord as shooting and developing a roll of film. It’s more analog, it’s tangible, it’s just somehow more special.

The prints in the photograph above were made on Harman by Hahnemuhle Matt Cotton Smooth paper. The texture and weight of the paper is exceptional, and the depth of the photographs beautiful. I made these prints for a special side project, and I can hardly bear to part with them.

I’m not saying you HAVE to print, but I’m saying you SHOULD. You probably won’t know what I’m talking about until you do, but the results will speak–nay, sing–for themselves.
